Over the past 50 years, has there been a social and cultural shift away from the verbal/textual and towards the visual? If so, has this shift accelerated during the past 10 to 20 years?
Yes, I strongly believe that there has been a massive social and cultural and shift away from the verbal and towards the visual over the past 50 years. With the rise of technology there has been a huge increase of visual communication, which is no surprise. We as, a society are more likely to; do our shopping online and read a book/newspaper through our phone. Not only it makes us lazy but also less sociable, we prefer to see the visual, for example photos on Instagram or on Facebook. We will look at the photograph first and then decided if the caption is worth reading. This is not only happening in technology and social media but also in advertisement; a clean magazine spread, aesthetically pleasing photograph/illustration with few words will be just enough for us. Back in the 1950’s it was all about the words that you used to advertised the product to increase your sales.
